Since my recovery partition has been corrupted for some very stupid and annoying reason, is there anyway I can make my own one from a Vista Installation disc? I'm guessing not but hey worth asking...

| You can create an image of your partition. That's one thong I recommend, especially to Win XP users since there's so many updates after the OS has been installed or even after XP2 has been installed. Once you installed Vista (or XP) and have installed all the updates and drivers and have everything running fine, creating and saving an image can speed up the re-installation process later on. |

| http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...ls/backup.mspx If your current install is working AOK. then make the restore img using backup. you can restore from it any time... But I'm interested in how did the RESTORE IMG get corrupted... it is suppost to be FULLY protected and non-writable... I know that XP you simply had to copy dir I386 directly from the CD to x:\restore

| You may want to see this website: http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilit...andimage.shtml If you are making an image, you should first run the Disk Ceanup and Defrag utilities. |

| Your guess is as good as mine, I don't know how it got corrupted but anyway...could I ring Acer to see whether they could restore the partition? If there is no way of recovering it, it doesn't matter too much as I have both XP and Vista Disks but I just thought if there was a way of getting back the partition then might as well try.

| Yes, you should try contacting Acer...check their support section in their website. Although you have the OS DVD, the partition will have other applications as well, programs, drivers, etc. If you can get Acer to somehow make the partition active again, then I suggest you do the following: I'm assuming that you bought a PC with Win XP and the upgrade option to Vista. 1. Use the recovery partition and install the OS, which I assume it's Win XP. If it's Win XP, upgrade to Windows Vista. 2. Uninstall any programs or application that you don't need or want, but that will be installed by the recovery partition. Most PC are loaded with extras, like AOL application, 30 or 90-days anti virus program, limited word processing application, etc. If you don't need them, now it's a good time to get rid of them. 3. Install all updates, including drivers. 3. Run Disk Cleanup and Defrag utilities then turn off the PC, wait a few minutes and restart. 4. If everything's running A-OK, create a DVD image of your HD and save it. Next time if something goes wrong, use that image to recover your system. I don't suggest you install anti virus, malware, registry cleaner software, etc. before making the image. Those type of applications that require constant updates might become unstable when installed from an image. Create an image first, then install those applications. |
