GPart and ISO Burner

Part 1
Quote:
XXX, i know all about throwing away hours in front of a gates box. but you know what? it sounds like you have an unfriendly gremlin in your box, and i am going to tell you what i do, because screwing around looking for things, getting software to fix, trying out this and that, going to forums, o baby will you lose a LOT of time!

i dont know how you have your computer set up, but this is what i do, a hack on the street. my hard drive is partitined in two pieces - could be more, but i went with two. it is a small box by todays standards - 40GB

i have 10 for the C where bill gates junk is which i need to deelop my humble progs, and the d drive has all myu coveted files that can never be touched by the gremlins created by 13 year old kids.

pretty soon i'll create a third partition and put linux on it, so there will be two Operating systems - one the bill gates clunker that i have to have for the sake of the fact the whold world haas it and if i am going to make programs i have to know what uncle bill is up to, and on the other part of my computer, another partition on the hard drive, there will be linux - gives me goosebumps just thinking about it

now, let's say uncle bill is jerking you around again all you would have to do is reboot from the linux drive and get going with firefax and your web pages will fly - all of them

so i suppose the best way to set up your computer is (let's say you are not a cave dweller like me and have at least an 80GB hard drive)

10GB for uncle bill OS and NOTHING ELSE

10GB for linux OS and maybe something else

60 GB for your beloved files

now, today is your lucky day, because i am going to give you a link to a really sweet piece of software, and it is free, no bigs, nothing - truly awesome stuff

downloads.sourceforge.net/gparted/gparted-livecd-0.3.4-6.iso?modtime=1176448208&big_mirror=0

from

gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php

this is a partition creator, hard drive resizer program that is fantastic
the file to download is an .iso file which means it becomes a sweet, self contained bootable program where it runs on its own fire having nothing to do with windows.

but it takes a special program to burn the image to your cd burner:

www.terabyteunlimited.com/downloads/burncdcc.zip

this is a small sweet program that specializes in burning ios images to our cd's so you dont have to stress over that part of it.
Passing info to those that might need it... This is all suppose to work in VISTA.

Part 2/3 - DiskView - Passwords

Quote:
but if things are a little tight, you'll have to take a closer look. you want to be absolutely sure you do not slice off even a single piece of a data file on the drive when you resize the monster.

to be very clear about where the *presice* end of the HD is, here is another link to another great program, beautifullly small, but works great:

download.sysinternals.com/Files/DiskView.zip

and this comes from

http://www.microsoft.com/TechNet/Sys.../DiskView.mspx

(whaddaya know, uncle bill bought out a good company!)

the download is only 88KB, is that great, or what!??!?!!!

when you run diskview (after a defrag) you'll see how the data is organized on your HD. you'll want to click on the 'refresh' button, and this will draw the picture of your HD.
and the last part

lastly, here is another link for some very useful software - it passowrd protects directories. this way you can have files you dont care about on C and G, and you can lock everybody out from drive F.

http://www.lockfolder.net/

this is a great setup. it might sound like a lot of time now, but down the road it'll save you far more than you invest right now

hope this helps
I removed lots of "stuff" and have posted only the important parts of this long
how to make a partition, burn an .iso and set passwords
