I turned on my computer this morning an I see an icon titled "Safely Remove Hardware". I have no clue what it is for Why would I want to remove them? My OS is Vista Home Premium and everything appears to be working properly. I need guidance please - I am in over my head on this one. Thanks

| The purpose of "Safely Remove Hardware" It's how you tell Windows that you're about to remove a device so that Windows can finish whatever it needs to do with it. In the case of disks, for example, Windows flushes all disk buffers, avoiding things like potential corruption. |

| Thanks budeone, now I understand what it is for -- but I dont want to remove anything. I cannot seem to remove the icon from my quick launch tool bar --- any help? It strikes me as odd that this icon would suddenly appear ?

| You can hide it from the taskbar in the taskbar options... I believe it is called 'customize notifications'. I don't know why it should just start appearing unless you updated a driver or firmware or bios etc. Basically the devices are hotpluggable, ie you can remove or conenct them whilst the PC is on. If you still can't hide the icon or need more detailed instructions just post back crabby |

| Crabby -- I just checked the "installed updates" and found a NVIDIA Corp driver update for NVIDA nforce Serial ATA controller was installed this morning successfully -- however --- its been installed twice (duplicate).Apparently after that install is when the "remove hardware thing" appeared. Its still there -- I tried to remove one of the NVIDA updates and it will not allow --- saying it is in use. ![]()

| Honestly, even though you don't use it, it is an incredible feature, and one which shows how technologically advance our PCs are becoming. To hide the icon you can right click the taskbar -> Properties -> Notification area -> Customize. Then just select always hide. You cannot disable this feature as it is used for USB devices aswell. crabby |

| I agree with all the above, I also have had this and it had nothing to do with any of the above. Several programs which are Vista compatible but not compatible with ea other can cause this problem... My case was Ultra ISO and Power ISO caused a (BOGUS/GHOST Device) which was read as a hot swappable device which will be displayed in the task bar as removable... I cured my problem by slowly removing programs which I had added, then checking. Once i removed Ultra Iso program, the bogus device disappeared and the icon disappeared. It could be some programs you have just recently installed... which are not compatible with ea other... yet work in Vista... The question is: what programs have you installed? Quote:
