This is from an article from www.cnn.com Web reaches new milestone: 100 million sites POSTED: 2:32 p.m. EST, November 1, 2006 There were just 18,000 Web sites when Netcraft, based in Bath, England, began keeping track in August of 1995. It took until May of 2004 to reach the 50 million milestone; then only 30 more months to hit 100 million, late in the month of October 2006. (Think about it, Vistababble is part of those 100 million sites. Although it might seem as a small pebble in the sand, it has brought us together to share the experience and the birth of Windows Vista. Let’s keep it rolling.)

Netcraft by the way, is one of my toolbars and a favorite, since I couldn't wait for IE7 to get hot with anti-phishing. Link: http://toolbar.netcraft.com/ |

Apple Computers were the very first in the late 70's, then Commodore, then PC's. I could write a couple of books about those 'good old days.' This Forum, and thousands like it, are only a 10th of what a BBS was, and was capable of. They were the first true global interactive community and all running at 300 baud to begin with. However old timers like myself, and thousands of others around the globe created the WWW. |

Then in 1974, Vint Cerf (known to some as the "father of the Internet"), along with Bob Kahn, wrote a new protocol, TCP (Transmission Control Protocol, that would become the accepted standard. The implementation of TCP allowed the various networks to connect into a true "internet." Yes, many still exist, and here is one old Sysop friend's link to Sychronet BBS on either Telnet or http. Poke around, and if you check the 'BBS list' on the site, and want to see what a BBS was like, use Telnet and take a look. This forum and all the others like it, are simply one page of what a BBS is/was. http://www.synchro.net/ http://www.synchro.net/sbbslist.html Also ck: http://dir.yahoo.com/Computers_and_I...tem__BBS_/?o=a |

| I did, but didn't really have to since I was there, but here you go. The ARPANET was the first wide area packet switching network, the "Eve" network of what has evolved into the Internet we know and love today. BBS's ran on Packet Switching via ARPANET, then to TCP/IP in 1983. http://www.circleid.com/posts/a_clos...ay_you_decide/ http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/21...thday-internet http://www.techliberation.com/archives/014307.php http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/09...rnet_birthday/ |
