| Josh: I wouldn't format and lose my restore partition just to install SP1. Did you get a restore disk too? If so, then it probably will restore the restore partition too. Personally, I won't be installing SP1 until I am more sure of its effects. Right now, I am skeptical about the reported performance improvements other than in networking--which don't matter for a home user. I'll probably just stick with installing pertinent individual updates. I swear I'm wishing you all a very happy new year.

I really think Josh -never read the "you have to uninstall any prior SP1 before you can install another SP-1".

| Josh if you download discwizard from Seagate or download the trial version of acronis from there site you can make a backup copy of your hard drive which would be quicker to restore than it would be to format and re-install from an OEM and if you remove an programs that you do not want first you will have permanent copy which is already registered that you will be able to use for the life of the computer you will need to make a bootable disc from within the acronis program and simply boot from that, then do a restore and in less than half an hour you will a clean installation you will need an external hard drive to backup to then you can burn it to DVD if you use the high compression worth thinking about it will save hrs upon hrs of work |

| Now 1st thing to remember is Josh, is working on a Laptop... so he has no extra HDD. 2nd "the trial version of acronis" is much better than the FREE version from SeaGate..the Free version does not work on every system, only specific versions of their product(s). 3rd " I'm not sure Josh is technically inclined to "Backup via Acronis" Make a Bootable Disk, and then Move the Backup to safe keeping, and make sure the bootable disk knows where to find the backup... 4th FORMAT and FDISK is very dangerous too those whom are NOT Technically Proficient. and Since Compaq and HP make the Partition Hidden and it also is (Normally considered a different Drive). Even if he did FORMAT C: the Hidden Restore Partition (Drive D:\ - normal) would still be intact... but I'm not 100% sure the command to RESTORE would be there...Acer the Restore by Pushbutton is contained in the Bios... so with my Acer I can FORMAT C:, the simply push the Restore button, and BAM in about 40 min I have a Vista Home Premium OEM installed. (PSS: I did modify my Restore Partition to have Vista not XP.) There is also a method that allows you to make a Bootable DVD with the RESTORE Info included.. Quote:
Josh please READ the Included Manual.
