OFFICE 2003 - Assistant

Ok, this may have nothing to do with Vista.

But anyway. I purchased a retail version of Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003. I am, in fact, a teacher.

Anyway, this software is installed on my Vista computer. Home Premium. New computer. Dell. Vista pre-installed.

The Office Assistant. The little paper clip fella/gal that shows up in WORD.

I can't seem to change or choose a different 'assistant'. In my old Word 2000, I had a choice of 'assistant'.

With 2003, I right click, and a dialog box comes up that states: Hide, Options, Choose Assistant, and Animate. If I chose Options, then Gallery, another dialog box comes up and states: There is not enough memory to complete this operation. If I pick: Choose assistant, nothing happens.

The question is can I change my office assistant? In other words, choose something different from the animated paper clip? And what am I doing wrong? Or does this version of Office not have this choice?

I did use 2003 (I have 2007 now) and I always turned the animation off because it bugged me. I never did try to change it but it I know you can change it. Kind of weird getting an "out-of-memory" error just for changing it though. Have you ran Office updates yet?

Try changing it with UAC off if you are using UAC.

I don't even know how to access the UAC.

I may have screwed things up before I installed the new retail version of Office 2003.

This machine came with Works 8.5. I prefer a real version of WORD.

I had discarded my old computer. But I still had the software - WORD 2000 - part of Works 2001 - from use on previous computer. Well, I tried to install Word 2000 from this old Works 2001 software disk.

Either I did something wrong or this version will not load properly if Works 8.5 is on machine. Anyway Word 2000 did not load properly. There is nothing mentioned on add/remove programs on Word 2000 or Works 2001.

Could this have screwed up my my office assistant options for Word 2003?

I realize that the office assistant is a very minor point. All else seems to operate properly.

There's more.

I have obtained a second new Vista installed desktop. This time I used a different software disk of Office 2003 and WORD has the same problem.

I cannot change the Office Assistant. Same message comes up.

Different computer. Different software disk. Both Office 2003 versions.

Anyone else out there have any version of Office 2003 with Word 2003 and can you change the Office Assistant?

The files are there, but this is a "NEW VISTA" problem they work perfectly fine on Windows XP and I can see the files on the HD.
Detect and repair does not work, neither does a clean install of Office 2003.
The Answer:

It's not related to Vista. Office 2007 is discontinuing the assistant.

Notice the two problems in question are Vista and different versions of Office..Not Office 2007

Is there an answer here? Or am I a dog barking up a non-existant tree?

It is a problem with VISTA... It is not your Office program...
I can find over 1000 complaints of the exact same thing... from different people.. using Office 2003... and Vista..

either forget about changeing the paper clip or simply shut it off...
