Upgrading to Dual Core

Well tomorrow, I'll be installing this lot as an upgrade:

Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R Intel G33 Mainboard
Intel Pentium Dual Core E2140
2Gb DDRII PC6400

I'll be keeping current hard and optical drives as well as case and graphic card.

As some of you will know, my desktop PC is currently Athlon 3700+ based.

Wish me luck, not that I'll need it....ahem!!!;-)

I'll let you know how it goes.

p.s. Why the E2140? Because this board supports the FULL range of Intel Dual Core CPU's as well as future Quad Cores so a more powerful CPU upgrade will be on the cards in a few months time...

little tip for you, when u go dual core make sure u get a good heatsink and fan, my dual core has suffered from overheating over the last few weeks. The only way i solved this is by buying a new heatsink and fan and a tube of OCZ Ultra 5+ Silver Thermal Compound.

Good luck with you project, and i hope u have many hours of overheating free computing

iMatt, I envy you. Want to finish upgrading mine, but can't afford it right now, at least not to what I want. Anyway, I imagine you did get the CPU with a heatsink and fan, but if not, like Ant said, make sure you do get both. And when it comes to heatsink and fan, quality is a plus. Also, get a good quality grease, not toothpaste like some builders have done and use.

I wish you luck and don't forget to report back to us with your results.

Anthony, I'll be using the supplied heatsink and fan.

Felix, this PC will not be the "desired" spec I want but will do till I get a better CPU and mor RAM.

This is the first retail packaged CPU I've ever bought. All the others have been OEM.

Well its done and dusted! The CPU is running well at 2.13Ghz and the 2Gb RAM runs fine!!

The Win Exp Index is up to 5.1 from 4.3....

Cool man! Glad everything has gone well; I know the feeling. Do you notice the difference in speed?

Felix, yes and no!!! Certain things seem smoother rather than quicker. Vista just feels "more right" or is it just me???

The one thing i noticed about dual core is doing more than 1 thing at a time now I do 3-5 things at once and no slowdown of the system it will just keep going and going ,no matter what ever I throw its way.

I hope that your Dual-core Intel CPU works as well as my Dual-core AMD.
If the answer is Yes, then you will be very happy.

Congratulations.
