If a persons current perfect 10 can go down over time, it would have to be from Microsoft making upgrades to Vista through various patches and such. This, of course will really not set well with a lot of users that are currently spending a lot of money to get that better rating. A friend of mine and I are here discussing the situation and it seems we are at a checkmate. Maybe MS should scrap the ratings because it may well bite them in the end. Chabalym

Since my last post I found now that the max rating is five. However, the point I was trying to make is that most people are going to pay more attention to the performance rating, rather than the quality of the PC. Manufactures aware of the perfromance rating impact on sales will go for that five; some consumers will look for the five, compare prices and go for the cheapest product. If there's a new and an older PC on the shelf and both have the same rating, must probable a person will buy the older PC. Now depending on the PC, as new software updates are implementing, like Chabalym mentioned, the score will go down, but how fast and far that rating will go down will have to depend on the quality and manufactured date of that PC. Which brings another point, if u bring that PC home and start downloading upates, installing new software/hardware and so forth, and ur five drops to a four or three, what would you do? I agree with Chabalym, there are far too issues, and sooner or later MS will have to "scrap the ratings".

Hello Guy's. I'm back!!! I think the best way to deal with ratings over time will simply be to allow HIGHER ratings. Obviously new software in the future will require PCs with more power. So the way to show this is to use linear progression of the ratings. Changing the values of each piece of hardware would be useless. It is interesting that the highest rating atm is 5, obviously thats the 'general score'? (I have some harware rating above 5.0) It wont be scrapped and will just be adapted to hold newer hardware. You must remember they will have set the performance ratings with todays technology in mind. In the future they will just add to the list with higher numbers. crabby

Hi crabby, No one responded to you query on "copying files" I really was interested in an answer to that from one of the "brains". If MS could expand straight from the DVD to the installation, without the copying, that installation would really buzz!

Hi Josh. I think, if you are going to compare installation times, you will have to rate it up to the first time you can actually use something on your desktop. This will be very much dependant on the individuals reaction and typing skills. (entering Country, User name etc) I will be very interested in your results, using those criteria. After that stage I don't think there is a great deal of difference in personal cutomisation once you find your way around the different navigation. (screen cours etc) In my own case, Using two identical computers, one with XP and one with Vista, XP definitely installed the quicker. But this is RC1/5728. I believe MS are giving this some priority before the final release which is around the corner.
