xubuntu is a very good choice! Did you know the installation CD is a live CD? It means that you put the disc in and automatically (with no installation) boot into the operating system! From their you can install the os whilst listening to music or browsing the net etc... its the future of OS installations It also means you can take the disc with you and use your os on any PC at any time!

Wow, that's pretty cool, Crabby. So...no questions to answer during the install? No configuring? (i.e. which drive to install on, etc.)

Of course there are some config questions, but it's mostly painless.

Xubuntu is the XFCE-based Ubuntu distro. XFCE is a very lightweight but "featureful" (can't think of a better word!) user interface. I'm probably going to wait till mid-April for the latest release to be officially released before trying it out.

It's quite cool really... you boot the OS and there is a Shortcut on the desktop which says 'Install Ubuntu(or Xubuntu etc)'. You double click it... it says hello etc... are you sure you want to install?... where should I install the operating system... which file system would you like to use... installing!

A new installation disk is created every 6 months... there are daily updates as well. It would be good to wait now for the new kernel.

would that not make the OS slow...running of a CD?, I'm interesting in giving Linux a shot i have tried it before but i never really looked into what it can do and what it has...i think i had Suse? i think its called that.

Crabby you seem like you have had plenty of experience with Linux could you be as kind to tell us whats the differences between the variety's of Linux? And what would you say is the most feature packed version? i would also like a version with some nice eye candy too.

Also - here is an interesting read about the recent "Alliance" between Microsoft and Novell:

It appears that MicroSoft and Novell both have their customers best interests in mind!

I will reply better tomorrow... but a good rule of thumb is the 'window manager' the distro uses... if it uses Gnome or KDE then it will have most features preinstalled... if it uses anything else (like e16, e17, fluxbox, fvwm2 etc) you will have to make everything from scratch which will take you a long time! However Gnome and KDE are heavy and so you can get HUGE performance boosts from using other WMs and different distros

Depends how adventurous you want to be!
