Well it seems like Microsoft is introducing a new picture format with Vista called Windows Media Photo (we can call it WiMP for short can't we? ), that they hope will kill off JPEG. I am sure this is old news to the Vista gurus out there but this is the first I had heard of it.
Supposedly it has a very high level of visual quality even at high compression levels. I think licensing ends up being the big issue for these kinds of things though. Microsoft wants this to be used as an incentive to go with Vista, but unless they open up the licensing to where pretty much anyone can use it, it will not catch on quickly enough. If they do, however, then people will not need Vista to use it, though. So it is a catch-22. |
