| I upgraded my laptop from 5600 to 5700, and did a clean install (dual booting with 5600) on my desktop and did not see any difference at all. I understand that Microsoft used this build back in Aug 22 to do a presentation in Africa. I assume that if there aren't any major differences between the two (5600 and 5700), more than likely MS use it especially for that presentation and then it was posted by someone on the internet. Why would MS use a different build? Again this is my speculation, MS could had use it to run a specific program or hardware not available in the 5600 build. |

| Felix, I find the Microsoft Africa showing of VISTA_5728 interesting. If it has minor changes, why upgrade from RC1_5600, if that release is running smooth? Is Avast working now? I have downloaded build 5728, but hope to hear what others think of the version. Are the changes just cosmetic i.e Aero or tile appearance? Is it faster loading?Znod seems happy with memory usage. |

| Didn't want to star a new thread, so I'll post it here: The latest news coming out of MS is that SP3 for Win XP has been delayed again, this time until mid 2008. That’s long ways from now. I wonder if that has something to do with trying to lure more people into purchasing Vista amid concerns with Win XP security issues. After all, if they make Win XP too secured and more stable, people might stick with it much longer. By the way, SP3 was due to come out in around June next year. Go figure.

Should you purchase a Vista capable or Premium PC now and upgrade later, or wait until the OS comes out next year and purchase a Vista-ready-installed PC? This is the question many PC enthusiasts are asking themselves since the announcement from Microsoft concerning their free or discounted upgrade program. This is my opinion, for most people it will make sense to wait until next year. Here are my three main reasons: First, for the most part, a buyer who gets a PC with XP Home Edition can only get a free version of Home Basic, which is just a stripped down version of Vista. Secondly, in some instances your only choice is a clean installation of Vista; e.g. upgrading from XP x64, which mean reinstalling every piece of software and applications that came with your new PC and hope that your installation is smooth and without any hitches. Thirdly, Murphy’s Law: If anything can go wrong, it will. Upgrading your PC to a brand new operating system can sometimes be tricky, especially for those who lack the experience. For the most part, everything should work fine, but significant problems do come up. Waiting for the manufacture to match Vista to the PC is a smart choice for most.

| I agree, Felix. I plan to buy a new computer with Vista already installed. I'll still have my old computer that I'll upgrade, of course, but I don't see the point in buying a new computer now, and then having to upgrade. I'd only do that if I absolutely needed a new PC right now. If someone wants to buy a new computer as a Christmas gift, I can see how that would be the best choice, however.

| hehe. Of course, I am in the minority here. But, unless a new operating system is scheduled to come out "tomorrow," I never delay a computer purchase because of the eventual arrival of a new system. With respect to Vista, I think is makes sense to take advantage of the Express Upgrade Plan. I will have some trouble taking advantage of the plan, however, since I want Ultimate. I am hoping that MS will find a way to put Ultimate on the path given payment of a few more dollars. But, regardless, I'll have fun one way or another--creating a dual boot of XP Pro and 5840. Also, I could always upgrade XP Pro to Vista Business and buy a copy of Vista Home Premium to use exclusively for a media drive. But, one way or another it all will work out; I don't mind spending a few extra dollars to obtain more or less instant gratification. The older I have become the more willing I am to spend more money to get instant gratfiication. I do agree that it may make sense for the less capable to put a PC purchase off for a while. But, on the other hand, upgrading is so easy. And, it is not hard to make a disk image of the C: drive as it comes from the factory for ultimate salvation. But, in this regard, I don't think Murphy's law applies to me. Yea. ![]() I've rambled enough. I think it's the drugs. I just got home from my new surgery.
