Defrag also depends on which version of Vista your running...
Defrag on RTM must be ran thru start --> cmd (run as admin) then any of the below commands.
I'm not sure on SP1....

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6000]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>defrag /?
Description: Locates and consolidates fragmented files on local volumes to
improve system performance.

Syntax: defrag <volume> -a [-v]
defrag <volume> [{-r | -w}] [-f] [-v]
defrag -c [{-r | -w}] [-f] [-v]

Parameters:

Value Description

<volume> Specifies the drive letter or mount point path of the volume to
be defragmented or analyzed.

-c Defragments all volumes on this computer.

-a Performs fragmentation analysis only.

-r Performs partial defragmentation (default). Attempts to
consolidate only fragments smaller than 64 megabytes (MB).

-w Performs full defragmentation. Attempts to consolidate all file
fragments, regardless of their size.

-f Forces defragmentation of the volume when free space is low.

-v Specifies verbose mode. The defragmentation and analysis output
is more detailed.

-? Displays this help information.

Examples:

defrag d:
defrag d:\vol\mountpoint -w -f
defrag d: -a -v
defrag -c -v

C:\Windows\system32>

I know many people suggest the use of a third party defrag application or don't like the idea of not being able to see what's taken place, but I like Vista defrag. It has an easy to schedule interface and works silently on the background. It works nicely with superfetch to ensure those applications that are used the most are moved to the front and MS provides updates and fixes as Vista continues its growing process.

Post Vista is Not XP

Yet everybody knows that MS has never used a DEFRAG which it made by it self... It always was the lite version of ??? a 3rd Party Defrag program. So apparently Vista Defrag is MS first attempt to have their OWN Defrag. which does not give the majority of folks a DETAILED GUI... like XP.
<|>
I still prefer Auslogic Defrag. its faster than Vista, shows you a very detailed graph, and I have had NO PROBLEM using it.

PS: I hate background schedules... infact my scheduler if TURNED OFF-100%

Felxi I'm glad you enjoy your Vista Defrag... but I have to stick with Wiggles.

I have no clue whats happening with fragmentation on my Vista. Almost feels like medication without knowledge of the ailment I am thinking of installing one of the third party tools.

If you back at the previous posts you can either download a third party app or use vista's defrag option but through Command Prompt to get the detailed info (or any info at that matter).

It is really up to you, they both do the same job but at least with a third party app you can tell what is going on in detail.

I would recommend the Auslogics Diskdefrag (the link to download it is on the previous page).

Follow Wiggles recommendation. But what problem(s) are you experiencing?

I was using dieskeeper with xp and it seemed to work real good. My version did not work on vista, so I wasn't sure what to do. I can get an upgrade for diskeeper or I can just use vista.
decisions. decisions.............

I prefer Vista; in my opinion, it does its work fine and in an out of site - out of mind way. Sure it lacks the GUI, but I've been so busy that I just don't have the time to sit around watching the little squares as they change colors and are moved about the screen. The other thing about Vista defrag, is that it works well with superfecth to ensure the files you used the most are always place first in order.
