Back to XP

I know some people probably gasped when reading the subject line, but I have a good reason for a temporary switch back to XP. In January I will be taking an online class which should be no problem, however with Vista no text boxes for the online class show up so I can't post my homework, except to send it in as an attachement. I'm hoping the upgrade to 5744 will fix this, although if it doesn't I will need to make the switch for a torturous 6 weeks.

I have tried switching already, but the system won't even recognize my XP {home edition} disc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try formatting your drive. Then, your XP should be recognizable. You could also start up and insert your XP disk immediately. Maybe you could boot to it that way--assuming that booting to the disk is what you are trying to do.

You probably know this, but just in case: You have to make sure your BIOS is setup to boot from CD. Also, some motherboards allow choosing to boot from a CD by using the F10 or F12 function keys.

However, I’m not sure that when you said that your system won't recognize Windows XP, if it is actually booting at all. If it does boot up with the CD, but have problems when trying to install the OS, there’s a possibility your CD needs cleaning. I had that problem before and cleaning the disk with a mild detergent (dish washing liquid works well) solved the problem. Don’t use ammonia or alcohol though, they tend to dry and damage plastic.

Anyway, if you still have problems, let us know exactly what happens when the disc is inserted and you start your system.

I had my computer set to boot from the DVD drive, but for some reason it won't read the XP CD. I'll clean it and clean the drive again when its time, I don't need to have it done until January, but will be early in case anything goes wrong.

thanks,
