Good luck. Now that I know about your freezes then I would have suggested a clean install. SP1 is not at all likely to cure freezes. RC1 is not the final. Gold/RTM will be the final, although I am not sure if it will be labeled RTM. Check this link out: Technet on SP1 RC1. Maybe you still have time not to install RC1. I wouldn't; not even the gold version, but I already said that.

Is RC1 the final? (NO - but from insiders it is at 99% final. Depends on how many problems are reported by the Official 15,000 testers... )
I dont know anything about this stuff. Does it expire? (YES in 1 Year)
If you do not like SP1 RC1 then you can simply uninstall it and any of the Prep files.
It was a prep file... Yes, in all my posts about the prior versions, you can find that your system might need 2 or 3 different Prep files.
You also might have to wait 3 to 5 min between Prep files
You might have to wait 15 min for the final SP1.

Make sure you restart your computer after each update even though you will not get a prompt to do that.

Now you will see Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate 1 - Build 6001.17052 in the update list. Download and install it normally to update your system to Service Pack 1.

I have installed, & tested 3 different versions of SP1, I have enjoyed all 3. I have also uninstalled all 3 so that I could install the next version.
I also do a complete BACKUP of 1. RTM 2. ea version of SP1 so that I could easly go back to either version.
The only error I made was Flashing my BIOS and let the electricity go off, and screw up the bios... which screwed up everything.

So far so good... IE is working perfect. Zone alarm even asked if it could connect to the internet so something changed.

The boot up time seems to have almost doubled for some reason. It takes a LONG time to boot now.

Thanks again.. Now I can format at my leisure not Microsofts..

what is the boot time? and have you checked to remove some of the unnecessary items added to boot sequence.

Has the FREEZEing stopped? Have you checked the site link I sent to see what all programs you might/have installed that could/would screw up IE?

1m30s to boot, from scratch, is not that bad.... BSOD what was the code?
seems to me like you have several BETA drivers which can cause this or some not compatible with Vista. But like you said MOOT since you uninstalled.

Go to Start > Control panel > Administrative tools > Event Viewer and see if the error is logged. would have been nice to see what it showed.

Excessive Beta drivers for Audio, Video, other items, or possible that your USB external device was having problems...

without more info, and a list of programs and devices... who knows..

I found also that a simple malfunction of a DVD-CD device can cause this. BSOD or a floppy drive
