install from usb flash

I have to do a repair after a storm not a big deal its a system restore I have to do seems the system loads but as soon as it gets past the welcome screen I get no video a black screen. Dvd won't work but I have a copy saved on my hard drive and need to boot it from the usb flash so I can get into system repair any way a long story short I have transferred vista to the usb and got the usb to boot to C: but when I run setup.exe of course I get nothing but it can't run in dos can anyone help me out?

If your having it boot of the USB flash drive doesn't the Vista install start like usually. Why would it be in dos i am not familiar with this process but how did you learn how do do this, and how come you do not know how to proceed. Have you ever did this procedure before. yes it boots from dos and no I haven't done it before and no it doesn't just start like a dvd would thats why I need the help

thanks airman it does work just I have xp on my spare hdd so thats my problem but I think I have a way around it to at least reinstall it.I was hoping to do a repair from the disk but at least should be ok

Ya I never tried the USB install did some slipstreaming but never that one I am still reading some of the links I found very interesting reading glad you found a way to get done what you were trying to do .
