ok right.. i know what to do now.. stick the hard drive with vista on and the hard drive with xp on in your pc, boot from the xp drive, when in windows xp access the other drive and get the files you want and copy them to your windows xp hard drive.. id also reccomend doing a virus scan on both drives BEFORE you copy files from the vista drive. once you done that you can right click the vista hard drive in my computer and format it

Hope that helps!

OK, now I am confused. Maybe I don't understand what his problem is. Did you see my last post? Help me if I am truly confused. We must be confusing the heck out of him.

OK, except he says he installed on D and seems to imply that he is concerned only about about what is on C and E.

OK, just to clear everyone up. I 'installed' what now seems to be a hacked version of vista on my drive D which contains all my music for my iPod. However it didnt work, and ended up ruining my computer. When I start up my computer, a black screen with some strange icons and script comes up, not allowing me to procede any further. Windows XP does not load up, and I havent been able to run it in safe mode either. Some of you have suggested I re-format the disk using the XP CD, whilst felix8406 suggested I run fixboot and fixmbr. So far, I have insterted the XP CD in, opened the recovery console, however, the problem is that the computer only recognises XP (which is on Drive C), and so does not let me run fixboot or fixmbr on drive D. To clarify, I would prefer to keep the contents of drive D, although if I have to re-format it to fix the computer, it would not be the end of the world, as I can then take the music back off my iPod onto the computer. What therefore is the best thing left for me to do, and how can I do it?

Thanks for your help.

If you can boot into XP on your C: drive you will be able to get all the files you need off your D: drive through it. Disconnect all drives bar your C: drive and run fixboot... boot into XP.. shutdown... reconnect the other drives... boot into XP... grab the files off the D: drive... format the D: drive... done

sorry, please excuse the ignorance, but when you say disconnect and then re-connect drives D and E, do you mean physically, or is there some way to do that on the computer itself? if you do mean physically, ive never really opened up a computer before, so how do i tell which drive is which, and do i just pull it out then put it back in later, or is it something more than that? Thanks.

Just to update you all now, I think I may have misunderstood you. I ran Fixboot on the C drive, and then restarted the computer. Windows XP then loaded fine and the computer seemed fine. I then went onto drive D to see how i could get rid of Vista, and it seemed to be that nothing was there! Is there any way I can find out if it is still there somewhere? Ive done a search for Vista and enabled viewing of hidden files, yet I still cant find it!

Are you serious? No files are shown on your D: drive? Does the disk show as being empty or has is got used space? If it has used space try running scan disk on it.
