Installing Vista Beta but keeping Windows XP

Hello,

Can I keep XP Pro on my machine and also install Vista? eg. Two Operating Systems on this PC. Would I be able to make it install on another partition? I have Norton Partition Magic 8 which could create another partition for me
Any help would be appreciated.

Best Wishes,
Stephen

Yes, people are running both Vista and XP in dual-boot mode, using either a separate partition or a separate hard drive.

This seems to be a fairly easy tutorial on installing on a partition. Note, however, that I haven't tried this, so I can't verify that it is accurate, and it is a different build, so it may be slightly different. Should be close however.

Ah good information. That is what I want to do as well.

How much space do I need to install Vista?

You'll need 15 gigs.

Go Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management>Help and read about all the different kinds of partitions. From there, you should be able to figure things out. I think a better alternative is to use a different drive, but you will be able to run both on the same drive/different partitions with no problem. If interested in the alternative check out my "Here's how it went/goes for me" thread--if you have a laptop. And, of could you can do the same thing with a desktop. I am assuming that you are running XP right now. The needed help files may non be available on Beta 2 yet.

hopefully i can still recover....

i had vista running and was having some issues that made me wish to revert to XP Pro

I booted from XP CD and am now told the drives are BAD? and I tries to remove partition and create it but can not get past the format - continuously tells me problems with the drive.

got my fingers crossed as I have some data on another partition i must get to.... i know it should have been backed up but here i am....

Wondering if fdisk would help. Can't remember if you can fdisk just that partition or not though. Wouldn't want you to lose the data on the other partition. Aaargh, hate when my memory fails me.

Send a message via Yahoo to sacredragon
here a bit to ponder

fdisk will only do the whole disk so that not gonna work their is a program called wonder partion maker thatll aloww u to fdisk just the selected partion not the whole disk i think it like 29.99 thow but it might be worth it iff the information is important.
