Installing Vista help pleeeeease

Hello,

Last month I was fortunate to install build 6000 worked great and installed no problem, but since then I have formatted my hard disk and also my XP hard drive to go for a clean install of both. I have re-installed XP on one Hard disk and I am trying to install vista again on my 300 gig hdd. However the copying files stops at 47% saying 0x8070241 which is strange as its the original backup dvd. So I have tried similar builds and they get to the unpacking stage and then stop around the 27% mark. Just to re-cap I have tried installing different versions of vista from xp and also from dvd at startup but I am having no luck. I have also tried burning the iso's with Nero and Alcohol and even tried installing vista onto a 3rd hard disk just incase it didn't like my 300 gig one but still no luck.

AMd Athlon XP 2600+
1 gig Ram

The main things that I think of are that your "original backup DVD" (what happened to the original DVD?) is bad and that the files you have downloaded more recently are corrupt or have been burned too quickly. MS recommends burning at no more than 4x. You could always try installing XP on the second drive too and updating to 6000 if your version of 6000 allows this option (i.e., some do and some don't).

When the error occurs, does the install drop out of the GUI to a text prompt/BSOD? Otherwise, is there any other information held on the screen? Have you bought any new hardware recently?

Disconnect all hardware except what is required for installation (including PCI cards etc). If you have more than 1 DIMM of RAM try using just 1 (then if the problems re-occurs try using the other). If the disk was fine the first time it should really be fine the second.

The reasoning behind my thoughts is that I believe you are having a memory dump issue. Any more info would be appreciated

Hello and thanks for replying to my original thread. I have burned the iso with a couple of progs but the slowest speed i am able to select is 6x I have since removed 1 stick of memory although I still haven't been able to install vista, so I am still stuck any future thoughts would be appreciated on the matter.

Hello crabby,

Thank you for replying to my thread. I did buy 1 stick of memory once i had installed vista but I have now taken it out but unfortunately still no luck. Any further thoughts would be appreciated.

There are many CHEAP 4x DVD-rw's around... that gives you a 4X on first burn then 2.4X on second burn.
Very easy to burn it slow....(PS: No coasters that way either)

Glad your RAM didn't help (as it means its ok ). If that wasn't the issue then the error code you have given suggests a burning issue, from what I have found on the net. Many people sorted it by simply reburning the .iso. I have never had an issue burning the .iso at full speed, but the lower the speed the better, and make sure to use speed certified disks.

My experience has been the same. Usually, I have burned at full speed. But, of course, many have had problems not burning slowly.

Whee sure glad that is gone. Reason: Vistababble is back.

yesterday, I tested a new pack of DVD-R's and burnt 12 to 15 at 16X.. no problems, the person whom brought them over had a coaster on every one that she had tried, (3 or 4) therfore I'm sure it has something to do with system, and firmware of burner and software..
She gave me the rest of the package of 100. since she could not use the 100pack of 16X DVD-R by Imation. plus some old 8X 8 or 10
I burnt with Vista & Nero 7.5.1.1 and XPSP2 & Nero 7.5.1.1..

felix8406 will become famous soon enough

It's difficult to say what the problem could be. I checked the MSDN site and they recommend downloading and re-burning the DVD. If you need help downloading the ISO let me know.
