So it copies all the files... then on reboot just says 'windows wont start'? Usually the errors have more information. Have you tried installing it with just one stick of RAM installed? You can add the other sticks one at a time (with reboots in between) once you get into vista for the first time.

And what?

All your hardware is new.. what manufacturer created your motherboard? Have you checked there are no compatability issues?

Have you got anything overclocked? Have you tried underclocking anything?

its a evga 680i mainboard. nothing over or underclocked. it went through the beginning of vista installation and on first reboot it goes to the black screen with the green bar and freezes after a few seconds. I havent tried reducing memory to 1 gig yet though....

680i chipset - Obviously you are aware of the worldwide RAID issues with this chipset.

Have you upgraded to the latest BIOS?
Do you have the x64 Vista drivers in a special spot for use?
Are you using NVidia Video drivers or are you using the WDDM drivers?
Have you tried installing with only 2GB or 3GB or RAM... installed?
Is your Raptor set to run as RAID or PATA or SATA ?
What are the jumpers set on the HDD to indicate?
What does the BIOS find your HDD installed as?
Does the Bios agree with the setting for your HDD?

I figured it couldn't be the RAM because after all, Vista 64bit supports up to 8 GIG, right? WRONG! Anything over 2 GIG and Vista has a Cow, untill you download a driver update...
Anyway, I took out all but one Stick of RAM and Vista loaded like a charm.
I went to Microsoft and downloaded the vista driver update and shut the system down. Put the 3GIG back and what do ya know, Vista accepted the RAM and is purring like a Kitten.
Psss: he also has your exact mobo and video card.

felix8406 will become famous soon enough

If it installs, I doubt the issue has anything to do with the HD. Also, if it's a clean install, it's using Vista's default drivers. You can run a diagnostic check of yous RAM using the Vista DVD. However, the most likely culprit would be a driver issue and your first bet would be a BIOS update.

I would like to see him remove 1 stick or memory and work with 3GB, if his manual says it will work correcly, if not then remove 2 sticks, and try with 2GB...
