Thumbs up Upgrade from v5840 to v6000

Be patient it takes over a hour to upgrade... (mine) 1h:20m..
upgraded from v 5840 to v6000... Dont make the same mistake I did
COPY YOUR SERIAL NUMBER .on your case cover... you need it before the Upgrade is finished.

other wise you have enter two wrong SN's before it will finish the boot with the 3 days left until auto activate...

I am confused about what you are saying. There is no upgrade option for moving to RTM (i.e., 6000). And, your key (not serial number) should not help you. Old keys will not activate RTM. The idea is to not enter a key and not try to activate RTM during installation. Then, you get a full 30 days of use.

That is what I thought also... I used NO Product Number/Key/Serial Number to enter into upgrade... while in v5840 I opened the DVD and auto install... it allowed upgrade or clean install... I chose upgrade.. after about 1h 20min... the screen came up and I had to enter a KEY to complete the install.... I entered 2 sets that were made up and yes they said no good... after the 2n set failed, Vista did continue to boot.... it gave me 3 days to auto activate or FAIL.. I used the "Welcome Center and additional info display to enter the "Product Number Microsoft sent to me" it did activate and say Genuine Version, lower right corner says "Evaluation copy"...reg entry says: 6000.16386.x86fre.vista_rtm.061101-2205.....slmgr.vbs -xpr says: "The Machine is Permanently Activated"
http://www.dhcnetwork.com/~s0121/Perm.jpg But that could mean until Jan 1 2007, I have no idea...

All I can say is WOW. What do you mean by: "I used the "Welcome Center and additional info display to enter the "Product Number Microsoft sent to me." How and why did MS send you a product number?

No. I also have not been offered the upgrade option. Maybe he has the beta tester "gift" from MS, Znod. But I did a clean install with mine. I entered the key, ( given to me by MS), normally at the start of the installation. and had to renter it for activation for some reason. It also says "The machine is Permanently activated" Only difference is my right hand corner displays a different message. But I am also a little confused regarding his serial number problems.

I sent email and ask for a "KEY" and rec'd one back... that is the number I used on v5840 and also to upgrade to v6000. (I was in 5840-inserted the DVD and followed the instructions. It came to upgrade recommended page.. which I used... I did also ask for a key, you can leave blank on clean install..This time I had to enter a "KEY"..which I did..at the end a page came up requesting a KEY again..only now I could not open the file on my HD and get the "KEY". So I entered 2 made up keys...*both failed* then Vista booted. start --> Welcome Center --> right upper corner --> See more info --> down to change product KEY... that is where it said I had 3 days until Auto Activate...I entered the "KEY" and after the activation period. I now have "http://www.dhcnetwork.com/~s0121/Genuine.jpg" this .
Note the Genuine and Windows is Activated I blanked out the number... " I have set Vista just like XP if there is a problem send information to MS.. and at last count I had 51 problems sent. all corrected except for 1 = NO MODEM at this time...
Bottom right corner..indicates
Windows Vista (TM)
Evaluation copy.Build 6000

Snuffy, correct me if I’m wrong, but this is what I get from your message. You sent an email to Microsoft requesting a product key and they sent you one. You used that product key to install build 5840, and then to upgrade to build 6000. You inserted the build 6000 DVD, selected the upgrade option and entered the product key you received from MS. Then after completing the upgrade, you were asked to re-enter the product key again. Of course, you didn’t write the number down so you tried to make up a product key, but that didn’t work. Then Vista restarted and you went to Start > Welcome Center > View Computer Details > Show more details. There you received the 3-days to activation message. You clicked the Change product key, entered your product key and this time your Vista is activated with the genuine logo. Also, all previous 50 plus problems you had before using build 6000 are now gone, except for the modem.

The problem with your modem is due to a missing driver. Go to Start > Accessories > and click Windows Update; Vista may already have a driver for it. If not, you should be able to find and use the latest Win XP driver.

I have two questions:
1. To whom or what email address you sent your request for the product key?
2. Was that product key previously issue to you to use on build 5840?

I have an even more fundamental question... considering RTM = build 6000 and RTM has no writing on the bottom right hand corner of the desktop... howcome yours does?

I am more interested in what modem you have as I all ready have 6000
