Upgrading to Vista RC1

OK heres the problem,

My PC: AMD 3200+, 1.5GB RAM, 500GB HDD space two internal and one USB, ATI 9800XT vidcard(Did the uprgrade with my 9600Pro inside)

My brother's PC: AMD 1700+ 768MB RAM, 150GB HDD

When I upgraded from XP to beta 2 it took about 1 hour or a little more and it was a breeze. So then RC1 came out and I tried to upgrade from beta 2 to RC1 that took half a day and wouldn't finalize so rolled back. Then I decided to upgrade from XP to RC1, installed my image of XP and tried to update. The update took 2 days and wouldn't finalize, my brother's by comparison took half a day and finished. It keeps getting stuck on the finalizing installation step and just seems to sit there. I was too tired to reload my image so I just did a clean install of RC1 but would like to know what might be the problem? I would love to be able to do the upgrade because all my software is installed on XP and I would love to not have to install all over again.

Not sure, but you can download a new RC1 and make sure you burn it at a slow speed < 4X. Assuming your Bro used the same RC1 as you, then maybe my suggestion will be even more worthless than I expect.

^^^ that was my first instinct so now we have 5 DVDs with RC1 on it. The thing is that it installs completely when I do a clean install which means there's nothing wrong with the media. It completes the upgrade on my brother's PC which again like you said means the media should be fine. I began thinking today that it might be an installed driver in XP or program that was giving problems but to go through that whole hassle again arggghhh I think I may just reload everything from scratch.

It is most like ly a persistent 3rd party driver. Usually before an update can commence there is a list of things that must be uninstalled, which usually includes burning software, AV, and drivers. The driver that stopped yours from working probably hadnt been included on their exclusion list.

Although there's a possibility, I don't think that a regular program will stop Vista from completing the installation. However, like you mentioned, a driver can most likely interfere, especially a network type driver. Also, security software might cause it to do the same as well. I've done upgrades from different versions of Vista to Win XP and the longest it took was a little over an hour, but I guess it all depends on the amount of programs installed.

OK the thing is I know any AV or burning programs might hamper it so I got rid of all offending programs especially the ones that startup with windows like AV. Before I start the upgrade there is a list of drivers which aren't compatible with vista but they all have updated versions in vista so I figured the update would finish. I was wrong, when I have time to restore the XP image and try again I guess I will uninstall everything from the list and see how the upgrade goes.

Its easier to do a once only clean install and reinstall your software. Make an Image and you have it for ever!
